The Menehune - Hawaii's Little Legends
October 5, 2024
Cryptids, like most things in this world, come in many sizes. Generally, the most famous cryptids are at least human sized, if not larger. Sometimes they’re absolutely huge! In this article, however, we’re going to focus on what could easily be considered the smallest cryptids out there—the Menehune.
The Menehune, mythical creatures of Hawaiian folklore, are a fun blend of humor, awe, and a touch of the supernatural. These miniature beings, said to be about the size of a child's pinky finger, are known for their incredible strength and speed, often accomplishing tasks that would be impossible for humans.
There are many legends surrounding the Menehune, but one of the most famous involves the construction of a massive fishpond on the island of Kauai. According to the tale, a group of Menehune worked tirelessly through the night to build the pond, completing it before sunrise. The legend suggests that the Menehune were so efficient that they even managed to carve out a channel for water to flow into the pond, using their tiny teeth as tools!
Clearly, Menehune are creative little buggers, but they’re also known for more than that. The tiny creatures are often portrayed as mischievous and playful. They are said to enjoy hiding in plain sight, tricking unsuspecting humans, and even playing pranks on each other. Some stories tell of Menehune who would steal food from unsuspecting villagers or hide peoples’ belongings as a harmless joke.
While the Menehune are primarily a source of amusement and wonder, they also serve as a reminder of the importance of respecting the cultural heritage of Hawaii. But let’s be real . . . finger-sized cryptids sound like . . . just a little bit of fun.
