The Grill Flame Project

Our investigations and reporting have delved into many strange things. If you’re unfamiliar with them, just read more of our blog posts or subscribe to the pillars for more information. So, it can truthfully be said that this topic is pretty much par for the course here at The Supernatural University.

Project Grill Flame was a U.S. government program from 1978 to 1995. It was part of a larger effort to investigate the potential for psychic phenomena in military and domestic intelligence applications. The program was based at Fort Meade, Maryland, and was overseen by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the Army's Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM).

The program involved a variety of experiments and research, including remote viewing, psychokinesis, and other paranormal phenomena. If you’re unfamiliar with remote viewing, it is the supposed ability to perceive information about a distant location without using any known sensory channels, just the mind. Psychokinesis is the supposed ability to influence physical objects with one's mind. By now, you might be making a connection here with other famous projects such as MK Ultra or The Men Who Stare at Goats.

Similar to those programs, the Grill Flame program was ultimately deemed a failure . . . well, as far as the public was told. Despite millions of dollars invested, no conclusive evidence was found to support the existence of any psychic phenomena. The program was officially terminated in 1995. However, some researchers and enthusiasts continue to believe that the program was prematurely shut down and that further investigation is warranted.

In reality, it would be hard to believe that the U.S. government would stop this or similar projects. For decades, the coffers of tax-payer money (or lack thereof, a la the deficit) have funded many unwarranted theories and pet projects. So, did Project Grill Flame cease? Probably not.
